By Johnny “JayByrd” & The Dream Factory Society
For years, the ’86 Grand Prix has been a canvas, a testament to raw American muscle. But for my build, the Dream Factory Society called for something specific: a naturally aspirated (N/A) 454 Big Block Chevy that could dominate the street with a menacing rumble, then hit the drag strip and lay down serious numbers—all while retaining pump gas manners. This isn’t just an engine; it’s a meticulously crafted heart for a true “Steel & Soul” machine.

Forget the debate between crate engines and custom builds. When you chase true performance, you build it yourself. Here’s the blueprint, refined for a TH400 transmission and 3.73 rear gears:

The Philosophy: Why These Parts Work Together
1. The “Heartbeat” – Compression & Camshaft:
We’re aiming for a stout 10.5:1 static compression ratio. This is critical: it’s the sweet spot for maximum N/A power on readily available 93 octane pump gas. Paired with the COMP Cams #11-432-8 Hydraulic Roller kit, the engine comes alive. This cam’s 230°/236° duration and 110° Lobe Separation Angle (LSA) deliver that aggressive, choppy idle we crave, yet it maintains excellent street manners and sufficient vacuum for power brakes. It’s designed to come alive right where our 3.73 gears and 2800 stall converter want it.
2. Breathing Deep – Heads & Intake:
Forget massive rectangular port heads for a 454 street car; they kill low-end velocity. We’re running Edelbrock Performer RPM Aluminum Oval Port heads (#60459) with 290cc intake runners. These heads flow incredibly well while maintaining high port velocity for instant throttle response. The aluminum construction shaves precious pounds off the nose of the Grand Prix. Bolted to these heads is the Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake (#7561), ensuring a cool, dense fuel charge for consistent power, especially in warmer climates.
3. Fueling the Fire – The Carburetor:
An 850 CFM Holley Double Pumper (#0-4781C) is the only choice. With the TH400 and 3.73 gears, you can handle the aggressive mechanical secondaries, delivering an immediate, powerful punch when you stomp the pedal.
4. Hooking Up – The Drivetrain Connection:
The B&M Holeshot 2400-2800 RPM stall converter (#20412) is perfectly matched to the cam. It flashes right into the engine’s torque peak on launch, but is tight enough for comfortable cruising without excessive heat. The bulletproof TH400 and the versatile 3.73 rear gears complete a proven street-strip combination.
5. Reliability & Details – Oiling & Exhaust:
• Oiling: A Melling High Volume Oil Pump (#10770) with a heavy-duty intermediate shaft is crucial for big block longevity, especially with a hydraulic roller. The Milodon 7-quart low-profile oil pan (#30950) ensures ample oil capacity while clearing the G-Body crossmember.
• Exhaust: Hooker Super Comp 2″ Primary Headers (#2455HKR) provide excellent flow. To prevent those notorious leaks, we’re using Remflex Graphite Gaskets (#2004) for their superior sealing properties, secured by Stage 8 Locking Header Bolts (#8912A)—a non-negotiable for a no-fuss, leak-free exhaust.
The “Steel & Soul” Verdict
This 454 isn’t just a collection of parts; it’s a symphony of carefully chosen components designed for maximum naturally aspirated performance. Expect 525+ horsepower and an even more impressive 550+ lb-ft of torque that hits hard and pulls relentlessly.
This Grand Prix won’t just look mean; it will have the “Steel” to back it up and the “Soul” to make every drive an experience.
